A MacBook battery replacement is not just a part swap — it is a precision job that requires the right cell for the exact model, a clean working environment, and proper testing on the way out. Without those, you save a small amount up front and pay for it again in 12 months. Here is how we approach it.

For newer MacBook models we source the best cell available for your specific machine: a brand-new original Apple battery where Apple still supplies the part, or a reclaimed original Apple battery — harvested from a like-for-like donor MacBook and re-certified in our workshop. For older and vintage MacBooks where Apple no longer manufactures or supplies replacement cells, we fit the highest-grade OEM batteries available — sourced from a short list of qualified suppliers. Whichever cell is fitted, it goes through the same in-house bench-test protocol for capacity, internal resistance, voltage curve under load, and safety (short-circuit, over-temperature, over-current) before it goes anywhere near your Mac.

Every battery we ship out has been through pre-repair diagnostics on the existing cell (so you have a record of why it was failing), a controlled discharge of the old battery before removal, calibrated fitting of the new cell, internal cleaning of fan housings and air paths (typically 5–15°C of thermal headroom restored on older machines), and a post-repair rundown test under realistic load. We do not just fit a battery and hope for the best.

Safety: every cell is tested against UK and EU lithium-ion safety standards before fitting, and your old battery is sent to a UK-licensed lithium-ion recycler under WEEE regulations — nothing ends up in landfill. Performance: a properly-fitted cell restores full charge cycles, full screen-brightness range, and consistent peak performance with no unexpected shutdowns at 30% gauge. Longevity: a donor-pulled original or grade-A OEM cell, fitted correctly, will give you another full lithium-ion lifecycle (around 1,000 cycles) before the same service is needed again.

MacBook batteries, like all lithium-ion cells, degrade chemically over time. Apple designs them to retain up to 80% of their original capacity after 1,000 full charge cycles — for most users that is roughly 4 to 6 years of normal daily use. We do not advise replacing your battery unless its health is at 75% or below. If your Mac is a 2020 model or newer, it is unlikely you need a replacement yet — please tell us why you are looking to replace before booking, as your issue may not be the battery at all.

These are the clear signals that justify a replacement:

  • ‘Service Battery’ or ‘Replace Soon’ warning in the macOS battery menu — the most reliable trigger.
  • Battery health at 75% or below (System Settings → General → About → System Report → Power → Cycle Count and Maximum Capacity).
  • Your MacBook only runs when plugged in, or shuts down the moment you unplug it.
  • Visible swelling — the trackpad lifting, the chassis bulging, or the bottom case no longer sitting flat. This is a safety issue and should be replaced promptly.
  • Sudden, unexpected shutdowns when the gauge still reports 20–40%.

Apple themselves do not sell standalone replacement batteries for MacBooks — when they replace one, they replace the entire top-case assembly (keyboard, trackpad and chassis included), which is why their service costs are so high. We replace only the cell, keeping cost and electronic waste down while preserving everything else on your Mac that is still working perfectly. I recently had my 2017 iMac fail. I put quote requests out none replied, only bits. I was told the price for repairs up front. They fitted a new power supply which got it working but found another fault on the motherboard which they fixed. I was kept informed and had explanation of my repairs. This company is great. I dropped my MacBook and needed a new screen started of and messaged them on their WhatsApp link and they gave me costs and explained the process. When I arrived there the lady on the reception was really nice had a small chat and we picked it up later that day and Mac screen is like new really impressed with their services. I had a really positive experience of BITS. I took in my iMac in with a suspected power supply issue, mid-afternoon. The following morning (just 18 hours later) I was contacted to say that the replacement power supply was fitted and diagnostic checks were complete. I went in to collect and was given space and time to start-up and check the computer.

I'm really pleased with the service as well as the courteous and efficient dealings with Muhammad and Adam. Good price too, I imagine a fraction of the Apple price!

Very helpful, took my laptop for the first time and got it fixed super quickly. Great job. My daughter had destroyed the screen and chassis of her iPad pro 12.9 and then it stopped working. BITS were up front and transparent about costs, they ordered a new motherboard, replaced the screen and put in a new charging port. All for a fair price. Good comms, nice people. How does the process work?

Step 1: Book Your Repair

Select your issue, followed by your MacBook model, and receive a fixed quote. If you're happy to go ahead, make your booking - and we'll do the rest.

Step 2: Package & Collect

Package your MacBook safely in a plain cardboard box with bubble wrap. On your chosen collection day, Royal Mail will attend with a pre-paid postage label.

Step 3: Repaired & Returned

Your Mac will be assessed and repaired by our technicians. Once your Mac has passed diagnostics, an invoice is emailed and your Mac is packed for postage.
