Keyboard Only Replacement
If individual keys are unresponsive, repeating, ghost-typing or sticky after liquid or debris ingress, the keyboard is what needs replacing — not the whole top case. On every modern MacBook (Air and Pro), the keyboard is riveted to the aluminium top-case assembly, which is why Apple’s own service replaces the entire top-case: keyboard, trackpad, battery, chassis and antennas all in one go. That is an extremely expensive option and produces a significant amount of avoidable e-waste.
Our technicians drill out the rivets, lift the failed keyboard out and fit a like-for-like UK-layout replacement, preserving your original chassis, trackpad, battery, antennas, fans, ports and Touch Bar. The repair is tested with Apple Diagnostics before it leaves our workshop, comes with a 1-year warranty, and costs a fraction of Apple’s top-case replacement service.
Unlike Windows, key issues on a Mac are rarely software-related — unless ‘Sticky Keys’ is enabled in Accessibility, or a specific shortcut key has been remapped in System Settings. We will rule both out as part of pre-repair diagnostics before charging you for any work.

How do you know your keyboard needs replacing? The most reliable signs:
- One or more keys completely dead, or registering twice when pressed once.
- Sticky or stuck keys, usually after liquid ingress (water, coffee, soft drinks) or debris.
- Visible grit trapped under keys that no amount of cleaning resolves.
- Backlight working on the chassis but not under the keys — this is usually a cable fault, not the keyboard itself.
- All keys dead at once with the trackpad still working — likely the keyboard flex cable rather than the keyboard, please book the Diagnostic Service first.
A note on butterfly vs scissor keyboards. For MacBook Pro models released between 2016 and 2017, Apple introduced the second-generation butterfly keyboard, designed to make the keyboard thinner. These models are prone to sticky or unresponsive keys caused by dust and debris entering the mechanism — a near-universal failure mode in butterfly-era MacBooks.
In 2018, Apple refined the design with the third-generation butterfly keyboard, adding a silicone membrane beneath the keycaps and changing the material of the mechanism. While this reduced the likelihood of dust ingress, it did not eliminate the problem.
From 2020 onwards, Apple reintroduced the scissor-switch mechanism, branded as the ‘Magic Keyboard’, offering increased key travel and significantly lowering the risk of failure due to debris. For these newer models, keyboard issues are less common and usually stem from liquid damage. In either case, replacing the keyboard will fully restore functionality.

Wow, superb super fast service. This morning I knocked a mug of tea over my laptop. I didn't really know where to go, i just needed to find a computer repair place as close as possible that was open on Saturdays. The 1st place I found was no longer there and I searched again while running up the road with my laptop and found I was very close to BITS. And they were open. As all of us our lives are on our laptops, mine certainly is. The guys calmed me down, checked the harddrive while I was there. It was OK thank goodness. As long as knew all my files were OK I relaxed. I left the left the laptop with the BITS team for them to check it over, and a few hours later they let me know that it was OK but a few things had been corroded and needed replacing. Thankfully they had it all in house and were confident they could sort it all before they closed today. And happy days, all good and I collected the laptop up before 5pm. Superbly repaired, very quick service, and at a very good price too - I would have been happy to pay more, it was much cheaper than I had expected. I recently had my 2017 iMac fail. I put quote requests out none replied, only bits. I was told the price for repairs up front. They fitted a new power supply which got it working but found another fault on the motherboard which they fixed. I was kept informed and had explanation of my repairs. This company is great. I dropped my MacBook and needed a new screen started of and messaged them on their WhatsApp link and they gave me costs and explained the process. I had a really positive experience of BITS. I took in my iMac in with a suspected power supply issue, mid-afternoon. The following morning (just 18 hours later) I was contacted to say that the replacement power supply was fitted and diagnostic checks were complete. I went in to collect and was given space and time to start-up and check the computer.

Very helpful, took my laptop for the first time and got it fixed super quickly. Great job. My daughter had destroyed the screen and chassis of her iPad pro 12.9 and then it stopped working. BITS were up front and transparent about costs, they ordered a new motherboard, replaced the screen and put in a new charging port. All for a fair price. Good comms, nice people. Step 2: Package & Collect
Package your MacBook safely in a plain cardboard box with bubble wrap. On your chosen collection day, Royal Mail will attend with a pre-paid postage label.
Step 3: Repaired & Returned
Your Mac will be assessed and repaired by our technicians. Once your Mac has passed diagnostics, an invoice is emailed and your Mac is packed for postage.
